Have the aquarium come to your classroom!

Portland Aquarium offers school outreach programs in a variety of educational settings. Supplement and enrich your science curriculum with our enthusiastic animal experts and touring education animals.
Portland Aquarium offers both programs on Ocean Life and Land Life.

Our age-appropriate programs run 45 minutes-1 hour.

 
Ocean Programs:

  • Little Sea Creatures 

Program Description: Amazing sea creatures come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This hands-on outreach program introduces some of the sea’s smaller creatures to participants.

  • How Big is a Whale? and Weird Sharks!

Program Description: This interactive program introduces participants to the scope of how large these amazing aquatic mammals can be. As well as the weird, strange and amazing sharks of prehistoric time to present day.

  • Life in the Intertidal Zone

Program Description: Tides come in, tides go out! This routine oscillation presents unique challenges to animals living in the ocean’s intertidal zone. This program focuses on a handful of intertidal animals and the adaptations enabling their survival in this type of habitat.

Land Animal Programs:

  • Fur, Feathers, and Scales

This program will help to better inform your students about the differences between mammals, birds, and reptiles. Students will learn core vocabulary words that will help to identify the physical adaptations that are beneficial to their survival.
Best suited for students in K-3rd

  • Habitat and Survival

How do Chameleons benefit from those long tongues? What about those eyes? Do all animals use camouflage? These are just some of the questions your students will be able to answer after this presentation. Students will learn how physical characteristics benefit and effect an animals ability to survive in their habitat.
Best suited for students in 4-6th

  • Camouflage

Through activities and games students will explore the variety of camouflage used by animals. This program explores both sea life and land life as well as why some animals are bright in color and what that means to predators.

  • Please note that on most outreaches 2 animals will go out. This also depends on the program chosen to be presented.
  • For the health and wellbeing of our animals outreach will not travel any further then 45min to 1 hour from the aquarium.
  • Outreaches are only booked on a Monday-Friday basis, afternoon request will have a higher chance of being booked.
  • Outreaches are only booked during the school year September-June
  • Max of 2 outreaches a week, once a day.
  • Outreaches in the summer are only booked for Community Events.
